Hans-Peter Klenk, born 1956, received Diplombiochemiker and Dr. rer nat. degrees from the Universities of Tübingen and Munich for work on early evolution of the three domains of life. In 1994, he joined W. Ford Doolittle (Dalhousie University, Halifax/Canada) in sequencing the Sulfolobus solfataricus genome. In 1996/7 he was at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR, MD, USA) contributing to several of its early projects, before joining, in 1998, Göttingen Genomics Laboratory as its founding head of laboratory. From 1999-2007 he was successively affiliated to two biotechnology companies (Epidauros AG, e.gene), simultaneously pursuing Habilitation at Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2007 he was appointed to the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ, Braunschweig) as head of its Microbiology Department. In 2014 HPK accepted the position of Head of School of Biology of Newcastle University, Newcastle, UK. He holds honorary memberships of national microbiology societies of Hungary (since 2009) and India (since 2010). Since 2011 HPK is a director of the Genomics Standards Consortium (GSC). In 2014 he was presented with the Bergey Award.
