Joachim Reitner, Coordinator
Joachim Reitner, born 1952, received a „Dipl.Geol.” and Dr. rer.nat. from University of Tübingen for investigations on fossil reefs in Spain. 1984 - 1994 he held an assistant professorship at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin with a research topic in deep reef caves of the Great Barrier Reef and habilitated 1992. In 1993 he was a visiting professor in Orsay (Paris 11) investigating the interaction of acidic macromolecules and crystal nucleation. 1994 JR was appointed to the chair of Paleontology at the University of Göttingen. He developed the new research field of geobiology and is the head of the Courant Research Centre of Geobiology. In 1996 he was awarded the GW Leibniz prize for research. Since 2011 JR is a long term visiting professor for Geobiology at the University of Nanjing. Research fields are geomicrobiology of extreme habitats, biomineralisation, and paleo-biology of Precambrian basic metazoans (e.g. sponges). He is an ordinary member of Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1998 and coordinator of the Working Group 'Origin of Life' since July 2013.
